BRINGING A BENCH BACK TO LIFE

DIY refinish a bench - contemporaryI was at an outdoor market a few years ago and found an old stool for sale that needed some TLC (sorry, I don’t have any “before” pictures, I did this project a long time ago, but try to imagine what I’m describing!). It had an old  leather seat, and the paint on the legs was pretty worn out. Both seat and legs were poop brown in colour. Not pretty. But it was a decent enough in structure, and I needed one just that size to fit in my vestibule. I bought it for less than $10. I headed over the the fabric store and the hardware store, and after about an hour’s work, this is what I ended up with! I love it and it fits in perfectly into the space.

Supplies:

  • Fabric – I chose a white faux suede material
  • Nailhead trim & hammer
  • Spraypaint – I chose black
  • Staple gun

Steps:

  1. I spray painted the legs and let them dry completely.  I didn’t bother to sand before painting, I just sprayed one thin layer, let it dry completely, then went over it with another layer of paint and it stuck just fine.
  2. I cut the fabric in roughly the same shape as the bench seat, ensuring that it was big enough to fit over the sides and under the bench
  3. Laying the fabric on the floor upside down, I centered the bench upside down onto it, and began wrapping the seat with fabric, stapling it to the bottom, taking care to make the pleats at the corners as evenly sized as possible.
  4. Once all the stapling was completed, I cut away any excess fabric
  5. And finally to add a bit of bling, I hammered nailhead trim around the edge. Done and done!
