I made this piece a few years ago so unfortunately I didn’t take pictures as it was being made, but hopefully my description of the process and the pictures I can take of the front and back now will be enough to provide a clear understanding of the process!
Supplies:
- Round flat mirror: Sometimes you can get small ones at your local dollar store, otherwise they come in all sizes at Michael’s
- Cardboard or Bristol board
- A circle cutter (one for crafting, nothing heavy duty needed!)
- Spray paint: I chose gold
- Glue gun
- Twine rope
- Bamboo/Wooden skewer sticks (long ones preferable)
Instructions:
- Using a circle cutter, cut a ring of cardboard/bristol board. The thickness of the ring (inner diameter to outer diameter) will depend on how many rounds of twine you want around the circumference of the mirror. I chose to do 3 rounds of twine, so I made my ring 1/4in. thick. Note:
- You’re going to glue the twine onto the cardboard ring, and then glue that cardboard ring onto the mirror, so when choosing the dimensions of your ring, ensure that there is enough overlap between the cardboard ring and the surface of the mirror.
- Glue the twine rope onto the cardboard ring with hot glue. Spray paint.
- Roughly place the skewers onto the back of the mirror to see how many you’d like to place and where. I bunched the sticks in groups of 4. You can mark the locations with a pencil. Try to get the arrangement as symmetrical as possible. Remove the skewers and spray paint them.
- Once the paint has dried, hot glue the skewers onto the back of the mirror at the marked locations. (Pointy sides of the skewers should be hidden behind the mirror). You can choose to have all the bunches of sticks come out at all different lengths, all the same length, or like I did, which was to have all the bunches come out at same length except for the 4 rosé points which I made come out slightly longer.
- Cut out a circular piece of cardboard/bristol board slightly smaller than the mirror. Hot glue this onto the skewar sticks at the back of the mirror, so that the sticks are sandwiched between the mirror and this cardboard. And the mirror is done! You can affix this to the wall now with just 3M Command Strips.
